Nobody's Thinking About You. Here's How to Change That.
Your warm network wants to help. You just have to let them know what you want.
Weekly insights on thought leadership, tech, and travel. Practical ideas that make your work and life easier.
A few weeks ago, I had a lovely call with a speaker who wants to grow her portfolio.
She’s already made a tremendous local footprint, but is looking to expand more nationally. Maybe even internationally.
(The dream, really.)
The good news: Her network already knows she’s a speaker.
The bad news: They’re not necessarily thinking about her.
Not connecting the dots when a conference comes up or when an event planner is looking for a referral.
She hasn’t told them her plans.
The thing is, people won’t know your dreams unless you tell them.
And even when they do know, they need reminding.
Sadly, your network can’t read your mind. (Come on, AI! Where are you on that??)
Until mind reading tech is invented, the fix is simple: tell people what you want.
More good news, you’ve got options.
LinkedIn
Less than 5% of users actually post.
You don’t have to post every day, especially in the beginning
I have a client who posts 2x a week. 5x increase in impressions.
The algo is weeding out the AI slop. The human stuff is getting attention.
Be specific about what you’re looking for.
“I’m actively looking for speaking opportunities in Europe.” “I’d love intros to folks in hospitality tech.” You’ll be surprised how many people respond with “Oh! I know someone.” Or “That’s me!”
Email
This one’s fun. You can send as the business or keep it personal.
People dig the personal perspective most. Go figure.
Create an email welcome series that’s evergreen
Send a monthly update if you don’t have a newsletter yet.
Once you’re in a weekly rhythm, your network has a real pulse on how you can work together
Events
Gotta put yourself out there.
Locally: become a more familiar face. Catch up with people you know, meet some new ones
Globally: attend industry events, especially hubs where you see people you don’t normally get to see
Expand the net, so more people know about you
Increasing your luck surface area means doing cool stuff in exciting places and then telling people about it.
Repeat: tell people about it.
Use your existing channels and add to them. Start with one platform and grow from there.
So ... what’s your dream? The thing you haven’t told anyone yet.
Expand your luck surface area.
